Turkmenabat, formerly and since medieval times, Chardzhou, also spelled Çärjew, Chardjui, Charjou, Chardzhev, Charjev, Chärjew, or Charjew (Persian: چهارجوی for ‘four canals’), ancient Amul, is the second-largest city in Turkmenistan and the capital of Lebap Province.
